Blog No.68: Digipak analysis (first example)

Colour

It appears that this digipak has a colour scheme that represents the band. Both white and gold colours appear on the inside and outside of the product. They're are light colours, which connotes happiness and peace, making this album suitable for a number of audiences. However, it's likely that this album doesn't target a young audience. If it does then the covers would include a range of light and dark colours. We're going to use a wide variety of different colours to target our audiences. Dark colours could be used to target an adult audience whereas bright colours could be used to target a young audience. The text is also easy for the audience to read. Texts that are black or gold stand out in front of the white background and the texts that are white stand out in front of the black background. 

Images

Although every album cover includes a barcode at the back of the product, we could also create a band or production logo, too. Most of the images depict the members of the band. Their appearance could suggest that this album targets both a teenage and  an adult audience. Although they are adults, their clothing appeals to teenagers (caps, sport jackets and trainers). We could include an image of the main character, the singer and the silhouette in the front cover. The character and the silhouette represents the narrative whereas the singer represents the band / performance. The character represents the narrative Texture is also used since the album includes colourful and greyscale images. This could suggest that this album targets a young (colourful) and old audience (greyscale). Or maybe these images are just used to add texture to the product. Perhaps the images in colour could represent the narrative of our music video whereas the black and white images could represent footage from behind the scenes. One disadvantage with this example is that there's only one image that depicts a female, suggesting that this album only targets a male audience. For our digipak, we could include images that depict each of the band members. Male and female actors play the band members, including an image that depicts each of them can engage a gender-shared audience. We're also going to include social media logos at the back of the cover. Informing the band's availability on Facebook or Twitter could engage a teenage audience. But they wouldn't make our product conventional since this example doesn't depict any social media logos. 

Font

Most of the text in this example are all seen in capital letters, which makes it easy for the audience to read. Although the name of the band and their song list are in capital letters, the font size of the band name is large and is featured uses a bold text font. This can illustrate how the name of the band is an important and dominant key element of the this album. However, the text on the right panel is too small and has too much length. Last week, I created a survey for my media class and asked them which font they liked better. We'll use that type of font for our band name "OTRAS" as it uses light and dark colours and has a bold text font.

Layout

The middle panel includes the disc, symbolising its importance of the digipak. On the left panel, there's a wide angle shot of the band, but there are three separate images of the members. These images close together create a length that's similar to the length of the wide image above them. However, the layout lacks creativity; there aren't any images or texts that are depicted in a canted angle. Still, we could include small images that would have a similar length of a bigger image if they are close together. In order to gain a young audience, we could have a couple of images or texts in a canted angle, gaining creativity.

Language

No taboo language is used, which makes this album suitable for a younger audience. The album includes informative language in the bottom left corner of the back panel. The band has their own website and it's possible that the paragraphs in the right panel inform about the band and their album. Since our song is called "Apply some Pressure" we'd also have to include some other names for our song list. If we're going to introduce the band, we could use both informative and creative writing, targeting a young and adult audience.
